TSB-2023-05 Leadership changes may result in consumer offset rollback

Last updated: August 11, 2026

Executive Summary

A very specific scenario that occurs when leadership transfers happen can mean that committed offsets may be reset to an earlier point in time, potentially resulting in duplicate data being retrieved by consumers. For further details see PR12931 .

If telemetry is being captured from the cluster, this effect will be visible by analysing the redpanda_kafka_consumer_group_committed_offset metric and looking for occasions where the value has dropped for one or more groups.
