Consumer with timestamp stuck when partition is empty

Last updated: August 11, 2026

Problem Statement

When a partition is empty (start and end offsets are identical), timestamp based consume requests fail with the following error on the server side.

WARN 2024-06-19 14:43:29,712 [shard 1:main] kafka - connection_context.cc:697 - Error processing request: std::runtime_error (ntp {kafka/foo/6}: data offset -9223372036854775808 is outside the translation range (starting at 0))

or

WARN 2024-06-21 10:15:47,632 [shard 1:main] kafka - connection_context.cc:882 - Error processing request: std::invalid_argument (Invalid arguments for constructing a non-empty bounded offset interval: min(7) <= max(5))

This applies to all releases that are lower than v24.1.8 or v23.3.7 (inclusive).

Solution

This is fixed in:

  • v24.1.9 and higher
  • v23.3.18 and higher

Notes

If you can't upgrade the cluster, please produce some records to the partition in question.
