How can I `rpk cluster config` command for my Redpanda cloud cluster?

Last updated: August 10, 2026

Problem Statement

We have a Repanda Cloud cluster, and I'm trying to get a cluster config setting using the rpk cluster config get command. But I get an error, "connection refused".
How can I get a cluster config setting of a Redpanda Cloud cluster?
Here is an example of the error.

$ rpk cluster config get kafka_batch_max_bytes
unable to query current config: Get "http://:9644/v1/cluster_config?key=kafka_batch_max_bytes": dial tcp

Solution

This is a limitation of the Redpanda cloud cluster service.
The rpk cluster config command requires access to Redpanda admin API.  However, the Repdanda cloud service does not allow users to access the Redpanda cluster admin API. (Ref: doc)

If you set up the rpk profile create --from-cloud or rpk cloud cluster select, you may receive a better warning message. ( Ref: link)
Here is an example

$ rpk cluster config get kafka_batch_max_bytes
This admin API based command is not supported on Redpanda Cloud clusters.
