Kafka Checkpoint Connector error: Unable to sync offsets for consumer group.
Last updated: August 10, 2026
Problem Statement
The Checkpoint connector returned the following error message when setting Kafka MM2 Checkpoint with Kafka MM2 Source Connector. How can we fix this?
Unable to sync offsets for consumer group my-consumer-group. This is
likely caused by consumers currently using this group in the target
cluster.
Solution
The error message indicated that you are consuming from the target cluster using the same consumer group, my-consumer-group in the above example. So, the checkpoint connector is unable to sync offsets.
You shouldn’t consume from both the source cluster and the target using the same consumer group. If you want to switch, stop consuming from the source cluster and start consuming from the target cluster.
Note
If you need to start the checkpoint again, you can try the following procedure.
1. Stop and delete the Checkpoint connector
2. Delete the Checkpoint topic source.checkpoints.internal on the target cluster
3. Delete the consumer group(s) on the target cluster ;e.g. rpk group delete
4. Recreate the Checkpoint connector
