Error message: "invalid request: request size {1195725856} is larger than the configured max" in Redpanda log

Last updated: August 10, 2026

Problem Statement

In the Redpanda log, you may find the "invalid request: request size {1195725856} is larger than the configured max " message. What causes this message? How can we get rid of this?
Here is an example;

kafka - server.cc:167 - Disconnected 10.244.1.11:36504 (applying protocol, invalid request: request size {1195725856} is larger than the configured max 104857600)

Solution

This message indicated that the HTTP GET request was sent to the Kafka port. Typically, in the Kafka world, the HTTP GET request should go to the REST Proxy server (Pandaproxy in Redpanda), not to the Kafka protocol endpoint. To get rid of this error message, you need to find the source of the HTTP request from the IP address in the log message to identify the HTTP client and then disable the incorrect application or set the correct destination (Pandaproxy, for example).
Also, please remember that if there was NAT translation via a proxy or Load balancer, the source IP address may not be the original client's IP address.

Notes

Due to the incorrect protocol, the error message "request size {1195725856}" did not indicate the correct payload size. The message doesn't necessarily mean the requested size was larger than the configured size.
