A franz-go issue: `rpk topic consume` does not return any message.

Last updated: August 10, 2026

Problem Statement

Sometimes you may notice `rpk topic consume` did not return any message without an error message when you expected to consume messages. At the same time, you can use other client utilities like kcat to consume the messages without issue.

Solution

This behavior was observed when the decompression failed. Unfortunately, the rpk debug logs (`-v` option) show no error messages. So, the issue happens silently and is difficult to confirm. The issue was fixed in franz-go v1.18.1, and Redpanda merged the fix in v24.3.6, v24.2.19, and v24.1.19. Please upgrade rpk to the fixed version. If you experienced this with your client app using a franz-go library, please upgrade the library to the fixed version.
